Shaolin Heritage

Honoring Over 1,500 Years of Wisdom, Strength & Tradition

The Shaolin Temple, founded in 495 AD on Mount Song in Henan Province, China, is one of the most iconic spiritual and cultural landmarks in the world. Established by the Indian monk Batuo, the temple quickly became a center for Buddhist learning. In the 6th century, the arrival of Bodhidharma introduced the foundation of Chan (Zen) Buddhism along with a series of physical training methods to help monks maintain strength and mental focus during long periods of meditation. These practices laid the groundwork for what would become the legendary Shaolin martial arts.

Over the centuries, Shaolin Kung Fu evolved into a complete system of movement, philosophy, and inner development. With roots in Chan Buddhism, Chinese medicine, and military strategy, Shaolin martial arts emphasize discipline, humility, and moral integrity alongside physical mastery. During the Tang Dynasty, the monks gained national recognition for their contributions in battle, solidifying Shaolin’s legacy as both a spiritual and martial force. Through the Song, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, their techniques spread widely and influenced countless martial arts traditions across Asia.

Despite political upheavals and periods of decline, the spirit of Shaolin endured. In modern times, a cultural revival has seen the restoration of the temple and the global promotion of Shaolin arts. The Shaolin Temple now serves as a worldwide symbol of Chinese heritage, resilience, and inner strength. Today, under the guidance of Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin, the temple supports a global network of official cultural centers. As the Abbot explains:

“Shaolin is not only a place, but a spirit. We share it with the world not only through martial arts, but through compassion, wisdom, and peace.”

As an official Overseas Shaolin Cultural Center, Shaolin Martial Arts Canada is honoured to carry on the living legacy of the Shaolin Temple in Canada. Under direct cultural recognition and guidance from the Shaolin Temple in China, our school promotes the authentic practice of Shaolin Kung Fu, Sanda (Chinese kickboxing), and Chan philosophy. For over 30 years, we have served the community as a place of traditional martial arts training, cultural education, and personal growth—embodying the values of discipline, respect, and inner peace that define true Shaolin spirit.
